Teaching designed around you

Emerald Learning offers teaching tailored to each learner. Each course is built around the student’s or professional’s level, goals and specific needs.

Theoretical depth, consolidation of fundamentals, exam preparation, year-round support for demanding courses (CPGE, engineering school, business school, teaching examinations…), specialist support or an introduction to fundamental mathematics: the content and pace are tailored individually.

About

Louis Emerald

Agrégé de mathématiques and PhD in Mathematics

Following an outstanding university education devoted to fundamental and applied mathematics, Louis Emerald chose to place his scientific expertise and teaching experience at the service of demanding, personalised teaching for students and professionals wishing to deepen their mastery of mathematics.

After completing the French MPSI/MP preparatory-class track, he continued his studies at Université Paris-Saclay, where he was admitted through a selective application process to the Mathematics Magistère, a demanding programme that he completed successfully. His studies at Université Paris-Saclay included a Master’s programme focused on higher education, during which he prepared for and passed the French national Agrégation externe de mathématiques, followed by a research Master’s in Analysis, Modelling and Simulation. The quality of his academic record also earned him an excellence scholarship from the Fondation Mathématique Jacques Hadamard throughout his Licence–Master–Magistère studies.

He then pursued a PhD in fundamental and applied mathematics at the University of Rennes, within IRMAR, one of France’s largest mathematics research laboratories. His doctoral research focused on dispersive and non-local partial differential equations arising from the mathematical modelling of ocean-wave propagation. Written and defended in English before an international committee bringing together European and American researchers, his thesis placed his work in an international scientific environment from an early stage.

Following his PhD, he developed exchanges with two Norwegian universities, in Bergen and Trondheim, which invited him to present his work. These exchanges subsequently continued through research collaborations.

His scientific career then continued with several years of postdoctoral research in France and internationally, notably at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 and Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan. These positions enabled him to pursue research in fundamental mathematics within international research environments.

Teaching and transmission have always held an important place in his career. At the University of Rennes, he taught tutorials to undergraduate students, delivered lectures in analysis and applied probability, and contributed to preparation for the oral examinations of the French Agrégation externe de mathématiques for students from the University and ENS Rennes, notably in analysis, probability and modelling.

During his postdoctoral years, he also provided individual online teaching to undergraduate and Master’s students. This experience allowed him to develop a different pedagogical relationship, more closely centred on each student’s needs, difficulties and pace. He developed both a strong ability and a genuine interest in individual teaching, which later helped shape his approach to teaching.

His teaching experience also includes a period as a professeur agrégé de mathématiques, followed by teaching at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 during his postdoctoral appointment at the Institut Camille Jordan.

This dual experience as a researcher and teacher, combined with daily engagement with high-level mathematics and an international scientific career, now underpins the Emerald Learning approach: personalised teaching that goes beyond solving exercises and aims instead at a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, reasoning and methods.

His academic and international background also enables him to provide this teaching in French as well as in English, from preparatory classes and undergraduate or Master’s study through to advanced mathematics, adapting the content and level of challenge to each learner’s goals and background.
